North Carolina designated the emerald as the official state precious stone in 1973. North Carolina has found the greatest variety of minerals than any other state in the nation, more than 300. A greater variety of minerals have been found in North Carolina than in any other state including some of the most valuable and unique gems in the world.
The largest emerald found in North Carolina by weight was 1869 carats in 2003 near Statesville, North Carolina.
